A Coin Collector's Guide to 1990s Nostalgia

Shot Of A Hand Examining The Coin Collection — Gardena, CA — Gardena Jewelry & Loan Pawn Shop

From movies to fashion, 90s nostalgia can be found nearly everywhere, including coin collections. If you loved the decade or know someone that does, then you can seek out coins specifically from the era. Learn about collectible coins that capture a piece of pop culture or represent some history from the time.

Purchase multiple coins to build a collection, or find some to give as memorable gifts for loved ones in your life.

State Quarters

The state quarter program was a massive success for the US Mint and still continues on today, featuring various landmarks and parks around the United States. The program originally began in 1999 with a release of five state quarters at the end of the decade. As you shop for coins, you can look for the original set as individual coins or together in a package.

The state coins included the first states founded in the nation, which were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. The reverse sides of the coins replaced the iconic bald eagle with specific designs for these states. For example, the Connecticut quarter features the Charter Oak tree.

The quarters are still in circulation today, but when you shop at a coin shop, you can find mint condition versions of the quarters.

1996 and 1992 Olympic Games Coins

Two Summer Olympic Games were held in the 90s, one in 1992 and the other in 1996. To celebrate the Olympic Games, the US Mint released official coin sets for each of the years. In 1992, you could find half-dollar, one dollar, and five dollar coins featuring imprints of athletes from gymnastics, track and field, and baseball.

The highly detailed coins also feature the official Olympics logo and American flags. A similar release came out in 1996 to celebrate the events held in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1996, sixteen different coins were released, including represented sports like tennis, high jumps, swimming, and soccer.

You can find coins based on your favorite events or try to rebuild the whole collection of Olympic coins while you shop.

Video Arcade Tokens

Video arcades were popular in the 90s, and many of the arcades relied on token-based operations to gain access to games. While the tokens offer no cash value, they have slowly become coveted collector's pieces, especially as arcades closed and the tokens were no longer in circulation.

A lot of the coins feature unique imprints based on the arcade they came from. For example, the Chuck E. Cheese franchise has included a variety of token designs through the years, often including the trademark mouse mascot on the design. The Chuck E. Cheese coins often featured the year on the design so you can keep track and build a collection.

Other coins have featured video game mascots like Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man.

POG Slammers

The 90s saw the rise of a milk cap-based game commonly referred to as POGs. Along with the standard cardboard discs, the main metal pieces were coin shapes known as slammers. Kids who grew up in the 90s may love collecting the slammers and all the various designs. As you shop for collectors' coins, you may find some POG slammers.

Some of the more unique designs include The Simpsons, Power Rangers, and WWF wrestlers. You could also find designs based on popular books like the Goosebumps series. The slammers can fit in coin cases to protect the designs and keep them in mint condition.
