1. Mickey Through the Ages
Starting in 2016, the New Zealand mint celebrated Mickey Mouse with a special collection entitled
Mickey Through the Ages. The silver coins feature iconic prints of Mickey Mouse, including shots from his earliest shorts like "Plane Crazy."
The back of each coin features New Zealand's signature mint design with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Many of the New Zealand mint coins feature this backside, making them all legal tender in the island country of Niue.
The coins come with a collector's case that includes Mickey Mouse art, but you can also display all of the coins together in a single display. The eight-coin set was released in two versions. The first is standard silver and the second is a colorized silver that features painted details on the Mickey Mouse character.
2. Year of the Mouse
2020 was considered the year of the mouse according to the Chinese zodiac calendar and the New Zealand mint commemorated this with a special coin collection infused with Chinese culture and designs. The
Year of the Mouse silver coin collection includes the same signature Queen Elizabeth backside with detailed Mickey and Minnie imprints on the opposite side.
Designs include themes like Happiness and Prosperity, two aspects focused on during the year of the mouse. Vintage Mickey and Minnie designs are set against backgrounds that include Chinese lanterns and firecrackers. The color scheme and design was created to match the Chinese flag.
The whole set contains four coins in total, each coming with a collector's case.
3. Disney Princess Gemstone Coins
Through the years, many mints have released Disney Princess coins, but one of the more unique sets is the Disney Princess gemstone collection from 2018. The coins feature colorized images of Disney Princesses like Ariel and Rapunzel, but one of the main features are the gemstones embedded directly into the silver coin.
The small gemstones are colored to match the princess theme on each coin. For example, the Cinderella coin features a blue gemstone to match her iconic dress. The gemstones are all heart-shaped, and additional design elements include background themes taken directly from the animated productions.
4. Disney Villains Coins
You can pair Disney Princess coins with a large collection of Disney villains. In 2018, the New Zealand mint also released a collection of Disney villain coins, including characters like Ursula, The Evil Queen, and Maleficent.
One of the features that stand out on the coins is the quotes for each villain. For example, the Evil Queen coin includes the phrase "Just One Bite" and showcases the Queen holding up the infamous poison apple.
5. The Muppets Coin Collection
Celebrate Jim Henson's collection of Muppets with detailed coins featuring popular characters like Kermit and Miss Piggy. The coins were released in 2019 and feature a full-color portrait of each character along with smaller portraits showcasing signature character elements. For example, Fozzie's coin showcases a smaller portrait of the Muppet holding a rubber chicken.
The four-coin collection comes with special collector's cases and each coin features a fully colored Disney Muppets logo on the design.
